In 1856 Captain Edward Sutherland bought Bush's Inn — which still stands on Clarkson Road South — and began growing strawberries and raspberries commercially. Within a few decades Clarkson was known as the Strawberry Capital of Ontario, and a 1915 station sign boasted that more strawberries passed through Clarkson than any other station. The Bradley Museum preserves the 1830 farmhouse of Loyalist Lewis Bradley, and Benares Historic House, built in 1857 on the Clarkson and Lorne Park border, inspired Mazo de la Roche's Jalna novels. Rattray Marsh, the last remaining lakefront marsh between Toronto and Burlington, is a favourite walk for local families and dog owners, and Jack Darling Memorial Park draws crowds to the shoreline every summer. Clarkson sits between Lake Ontario to the south and Erin Mills to the north, with Oakville to the west and Lorne Park to the east.
